In early May, international jazz
musicians entertain at the weeklong St. Lucia Jazz Festival;
performances take place at outdoor venues at Pigeon Island and elsewhere
throughout the island. St. Lucia's Carnival, the most extravagant two
days of the year, is held on the third Monday and Tuesday in July; a

prizes are awarded for the best band, the calypso king and queen are
crowned, and there's endless music and dancing in the streets.
The St. Lucia Billfishing Tournament,
held in late September or early October, attracts anglers from all over
the Caribbean, with prizes awarded for the biggest fish and the largest
catch; the blue marlin is the most sought-after fish, and everyone hopes
to find one that beats the 1,000-pound mark.
The last Sunday in October marks Jounen
Kweyol Etenasyonnal (International Creole Day), the grand finale of
Creole Heritage month; festivities are held in several communities, but
musicians always do their stuff at Pigeon Point Park and in the streets
in Castries, where vendors set up stalls and sell food and handicrafts.
The annual Atlantic Rally for Cruisers,
or ARC, is the world's largest ocean-crossing race. It starts in Las
Palmas, Canary Islands, and ends in late November or early December at
Rodney Bay; the event is marked by a week of festivities and parties.
