The best time to visit, December
through April, is also the most
popular time. Cuba's weather is at its
coolest and driest during these
months, yet it's still far warmer than
North America and Europe.
In the spring and fall, things slow
down. At off-the-track destinations
and even some beach resorts, these
off-seasons can mean fewer hotel
amenities; some hotels may be closed
entirely for repairs. There are,
however, benefits to traveling in the
off-seasons: lack of crowds, prices
that tumble by up to 25%, and special
events (such as Santiago's Carnival in
late July) are among them.
Average temperatures range from 19°C
(67°F) in January to 27°C (81°F) in
July. Average humidity is about 80%,
but much of the island is blessed by
cooling trade winds.
The central mountains are probably the
coolest regions; temperatures here can
dip down to 40°F at night during "cold
spells." El Oriente, the country's
easternmost portion, broils,
especially in summer. In some urban
areas, summer heat and humidity mixed
with vehicular pollution is an
irritating combination - especially
for allergy sufferers.
The rainy season runs from May to
November; the dry season, from
December to April. About 52 inches
(132 centimeters) of rain fall on Cuba
each year. The north Atlantic coast
and the central mountains are wetter
than the south coast. Hurricane season
runs from June to November, though
most hurricanes hit between August and
October.
Time -Havana is 5 hours behind GMT, or
on par with Eastern Standard Time in
the United States and Canada. Daylight
saving time is observed by setting
clocks ahead 1 hour from the last
Sunday in March to the last Sunday in
October.
Liquor Laws - Cuba has no firm or
clear liquor laws. Beer, wine, and
liquor are served at most restaurants
and are available at most U.S. dollar
stores.
Passport and Visas: A valid passport
is preferred from U.S., British, and
Canadian nationals. An original birth
certificate accompanied by a photo ID
that's issued by a government agency
is also acceptable, but we recommend
that you carry a passport when
visiting a foreign country. All
arriving visitors must have a
departing ticket.
